Just a few quick thoughts on this wonderful passage:
Col 3:1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.
Col 3:2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
Col 3:3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
Col 3:4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.
Paul is always telling us “what is”…and speaking it as if it is fully ours now.
So in Col 3, verse 1 he says that we “were raised with Christ.” This follows up from him telling us in Col 2:20 Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world,…”
Fact: you died with Christ
Fact: You were raised with Christ.
Then Paul tells us where Christ is. He is sitting at the right hand of God.
Now my dear reader please think about this. Is God everywhere? Or is God in a certain place called Heaven sitting on a big throne? Has God any form whatsoever? Can God be seen?
God is a spirit my friend. He cannot ever be seen. He cannot be found in only one location for He is everywhere. There cannot be a place or realm of existence where God is not present fully in all His person and presence. God has no form, no body…He is spirit.
Therefore the idea that God is sitting upon a throne in a certain location named Heaven with Jesus sitting on another throne next to God is simply wrong.
Jesus told us plainly where He is.
Joh 14:2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
Joh 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.
Joh 14:4 And where I go you know, and the way you know.”
Jesus IS NOT talking about going to a faraway place called heaven to build big mansions in the sky for us.
Joh 14:5 Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”
Joh 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
Joh 14:7 “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”
Joh 14:8 Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.”
Joh 14:9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
Joh 14:10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.
Joh 14:11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.
Jesus tells us plainly that He is in the Father and the Father is in Him. This is the “place” that Jesus has prepared for you and me and anyone who will believe. The place he has prepared for you is in your own heart..your spirit!!
That Jesus may be in you and in Father in you….and you in Jesus in Father. Not when you die, but NOW!!
Back to Paul in Colossians.
Set your mind on things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. This is just another way of saying…:
Rom 8:5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
Rom 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Where Christ is is in your heart. Where the Father’s throne is is your heart.
Paul says Col 3:2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. The same as in Romans 8: set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
Thus heaven or things above is your spirit which is filled with God. God lives in you. God rules and reigns through you. Your heart is the very throne of God. Christ Jesus sits upon His Father’s throne –and that is you!!
Then Paul says that your life is hidden with Christ in God.
The word with here is from the preposition σύν
A primary preposition denoting union; with or together (but much closer than G3326 or G3844), that is, by association, companionship, process, resemblance, possession, instrumentality, addition, etc.: – beside, with. In compounds it has similar applications, including completeness.
Your life is in union with Christ Jesus by association with Him in spirit soul and body…by companionship. Your life is hidden and concealed in Christ, Who is in Father. You are so much Hidden with Christ that you resemble Him and are complete in Him.
This is not something that you must work at to make it true….it is true of you and it was all done by the Father through His obedient son Jesus.
You ARE IN GOD.
You are with Christ…WITH Him….that means you and HE are one in perfect union. That means that if we have seen you, then we HAVE SEEN Jesus…just as Jesus said we see Father if we see Him.
