Trust ONLY in the Lord to deliver you

In the days of Hezekiah king of Judah the King of Assyria sent his army to destroy them. Such an army had not been seen before and their power and their might were unstoppable.

It seemed that the whole world was succumbing to their advance.

The mouthpiece for the Assyrian king came to the city and declared his message of fear and laid out the terms of surrender to the Hebrews.

Surrender and you shall still be able to eat

2Ki 18:28  Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out with a loud voice in Hebrew, and spoke, saying, “Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria!
2Ki 18:29  Thus says the king: ‘Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he shall not be able to deliver you from his hand;
2Ki 18:30  nor let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, “The LORD will surely deliver us; this city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.” ‘

The people of the city of God were under severe threat of being put into subservience to a foreign nation with foreign gods. They had a choice presented to them to trust in the Lord God of their fathers or to surrender to the Assyrians and hope God was in it.

The Assyrian spokesman was insinuating that it is God’s will that they all become assimilated into Assyria and not stay separate in Judah.

2Ki 18:31  Do not listen to Hezekiah; for thus says the king of Assyria: ‘Make peace with me by a present and come out to me; and every one of you eat from his own vine and every one from his own fig tree, and every one of you drink the waters of his own cistern;
2Ki 18:32  until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive groves and honey, that you may live and not die. But do not listen to Hezekiah, lest he persuade you, saying, “The LORD will deliver us.”

Here’s the deal

Surrender to us and you can still live in your houses and eat and drink and buy and sell….and eventually you can have a permanent holiday in our land –while we take your land away from you.

2Ki 18:33  Has any of the gods of the nations at all delivered its land from the hand of the king of Assyria?
2Ki 18:34  Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim and Hena and Ivah? Indeed, have they delivered Samaria from my hand?
2Ki 18:35  Who among all the gods of the lands have delivered their countries from my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem from my hand?’ ”

The proud boasting of the Oppressor was spouting his domination and control of all the world- as each nation fell down before his master. So come on church of Jesus why do you think you will be any different? Do you think God shall deliver you!?

Answer him not a word

2Ki 18:36  But the people held their peace and answered him not a word; for the king’s commandment was, “Do not answer him.”
2Ki 18:37  Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of the Rabshakeh.

The answer is not in debating the true nature of things versus the falsity of those facts being presented to us by the King of Assyria. It is obvious he wants to destroy all who resist him and to make slaves of all who surrender to him.

The answer is not found in courts and political help.

The people said nothing in their own defense to the Assyrians….instead they turned to God.

The Remnant have no strength

2Ki 19:3  And they said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah: ‘This day is a day of trouble, and rebuke, and blasphemy; for the children have come to birth, but there is no strength to bring them forth.
2Ki 19:4  It may be that the LORD your God will hear all the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to reproach the living God, and will rebuke the words which the LORD your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’ ”

Hezekiah rightly perceived that for the Kingdom to be birthed in his day the sons of God must come forth from the womb. This is the remnant. The sons of God set all creation free from all oppression and oppressors.

But Hezekiah also rightly saw that they had NO POWER to do anything about it!

That is what this siege around the city of God was all about–that was it’s purpose! The people of God must come to see they can do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about anything that comes against them.

Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven – Mtt 5:3

The Kingdom of the heavens and all their hosts of angels are waiting to act strong on behalf of those who know their own weakness and total inability. But those who rely on the arm of the flesh (including g*n ownership, and prepping) shall not have access to this heavenly help.

They sent their plea to a prophet

God has always revealed things to His servants the prophets before He does them…and to his prophets He has given authority to pull down the enemy and to build up the city of God.

2Ki 19:6  And Isaiah said to them, “Thus you shall say to your master, ‘Thus says the LORD: “Do not be afraid of the words which you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me.
2Ki 19:7  Surely I will send a spirit upon him, and he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.” ‘ ”

God shall deal with those enemies that blaspheme His Son Jesus. He shall cause all that they do to backfire upon them and also cause internal fighting amongst them so that they defeat themselves. The Assyrian king’s own sons killed him while he slept.

But the battle of faith Hezekiah was engaged in was drawn out and long. The enemy did not just back off straight away. But came again to speak the same threatening words. Hezekiah himself prayed this time….

2Ki 19:19  Now therefore, O LORD our God, I pray, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You are the LORD God, You alone.”

God spoke through the prophet Isaiah and declared things as they really are….that the oppressor was OVERSTEPPING his bounds and God will stop him.

2Ki 19:28  Because your rage against Me and your tumult Have come up to My ears, Therefore I will put My hook in your nose And My bridle in your lips, And I will turn you back By the way which you came.
2Ki 19:29  ‘This shall be a sign to you: You shall eat this year such as grows of itself, And in the second year what springs from the same; Also in the third year sow and reap, Plant vineyards and eat the fruit of them.
2Ki 19:30  And the remnant who have escaped of the house of Judah Shall again take root downward, And bear fruit upward.
2Ki 19:31  For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant, And those who escape from Mount Zion. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.’
2Ki 19:32  “Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria: ‘He shall not come into this city, Nor shoot an arrow there, Nor come before it with shield, Nor build a siege mound against it.
2Ki 19:33  By the way that he came, By the same shall he return; And he shall not come into this city,’ Says the LORD.
2Ki 19:34  ‘For I will defend this city, to save it For My own sake and for My servant David’s sake.’
”
2Ki 19:35  And it came to pass on a certain night that the angel of the LORD went out, and killed in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when people arose early in the morning, there were the corpses—all dead.
2Ki 19:36  So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went away, returned home, and remained at Nineveh.
2Ki 19:37  Now it came to pass, as he was worshiping in the temple of Nisroch his god, that his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him down with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Then Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place.

Anyone who deals with God in this way shall know the same help. Anyone who comes to know their own total inability shall have the KINGDOM OF HEAVEN come visit their enemies. They shall know the deliverance of the Lord God of Abraham and Hezekiah and the people of Judah.

Woe to those who touch God’s anointed ones.

Those trusting in their own strength shall find that the enemy overcomes them and enslaves them until they come to know like Samson, their own weakness fully.
