What if God was one of Us?

Joan Osborne sang the Grammy Award winning song “One of us” by Eric Bazilian in 1995…Here are the lyrics…(The recording does not contain the first verse)

I heard this song yesterday after not hearing for a long time. It is a classic and near to my heart.

So one of these nights and about twelve o’clock
This old world’s going to reel and rock
Saints will tremble and cry for pain
For the Lord’s gonna come in his heavenly airplane

If God had a name, what would it be?
And would you call it to his face
If you were faced with Him in all His glory?
What would you ask if you had just one question?

And yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us?
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make His way home?

If God had a face, what would it look like?
And would you want to see
If seeing meant that you would have to believe
In things like Heaven and in Jesus and the saints
And all the prophets? And…

Yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make His way home?

Tryin’ to make His way home
Back up to Heaven all alone
Nobody callin’ on the phone
‘Cept for the Pope, maybe, in Rome

Yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make His way home?

Just tryin’ to make His way home
Like a holy rolling stone
Back up to Heaven all alone
Just tryin’ to make His way home
Nobody callin’ on the phone
‘Cept for the Pope, maybe, in Rome

Of course the song is entirely correct! It is a song reacting AGAINST the God of Nicene Christianity –a far away god, a god separate from his creation looking on from afar. A God that is not personal and who knows nothing of being weak and lonely and pathetic.

The god Eric wrote about in this song is a cruel god…the god of religion. It is NOT the TRUE GOD who is revealed as a weak human man named Jesus–who of himself could do NOTHING.

The picture of ‘standing before’ the god in Eric’s song and ‘seeing him’ and then having to believe in Jesus and all that stuff is not representing the True God who by the way is a spirit and cannot EVER BE SEEN.

God the true God became ONE OF US in Jesus the man so we might SEE GOD in the flesh and know the Father who sent him.

Now ever since as people receive the spirit of Jesus into their hearts they are God in the flesh as well….revealing God as He really is in all our frail weakness and inability.

The religious god worshippers wanted to kill Jesus because he sang a song just like this one…

Joh 10:29  My Father, who has given them to me as his gift, is the mightiest of all, and no one has the power to snatch them from my Father’s care.
Joh 10:30  The Father and I are one.”
Joh 10:31  When they heard this, the Jewish leaders were so enraged that they picked up rocks to stone him to death.
Joh 10:32  But Jesus said, “My Father has empowered me to work many miracles and acts of mercy among you. So which one of them do you want to stone me for?”
Joh 10:33  The Jewish leaders responded, “We’re not stoning you for anything good you did—it’s because of your blasphemy! You’re just a son of Adam, but you’ve claimed to be God!”
Joh 10:34  Jesus answered, “Isn’t it written in your Scriptures that God said, ‘You are gods?’ The Scriptures cannot be denied or found to be in error.
Joh 10:35  So if those who have the message of the Scriptures are said to be ‘gods,’ then why would you accuse me of blasphemy?
Joh 10:36  For I have been uniquely chosen by God and he is the one who sent me to you. How then could it be blasphemy for me to say, ‘I am the Son of God!’
Joh 10:37  If I’m not doing the beautiful works that my Father sent me to do, then don’t believe me.
Joh 10:38  But if you see me doing the beautiful works of God upon the earth, then you should at least believe the evidence of the miracles, even if you don’t believe my words! Then you would come to experience me and be convinced that I am in the Father and the Father is in me.”
Joh 10:39  Once again they attempted to seize him, but he escaped miraculously from their clutches.

Over and over Jesus kept showing and telling that to be a NORMAL HUMAN BEING is to be filled full with and one with the Father – for without God you can do nothing.

God made you to be ONE SPIRIT with Himself so that you as you are REVEAL HIM to all creation. This was why they killed Him.

They were too busy rejecting God and instead spent all their time trying to establish their own righteousness -“earning Brownie points” or “merit badges”…this is what all religious people do.

So they hate the message that we are ONE with God that without Him we can do nothing –so they go ahead and TRY TRY TRY anyway to do do do something to prove to God that they are worthy of his noticing them. But of course they know inwardly that their efforts are not enough to please this false god they have in their imagination…so they know they are failures and must PRETEND AND HIDE their utter shameful failure to be good enough.

This only leads to exalting themselves OVER OTHER PEOPLE so as to APPEAR to be more holy or more pleasing to God……

God through Jesus, told all those trying so hard to please the unpleasable false god….

Mat 11:28  ‘Come unto me, all ye labouring and burdened ones, and I will give you rest,
Mat 11:29  take up my yoke upon you, and learn from me, because I am meek and humble in heart, and ye shall find rest to your souls,
Mat 11:30  for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.’

God is meek and lowly in heart….he is not some aloof far off snob who thinks we are all dispicables. God is gentle and loving and kind…everything we see in Jesus is what God is like.

What if God were one of us? Yeah yeah He is ONE OF US!! We are the children of God — Receiving Jesus into your heart makes you a child of God….If you have not received Jesus yet and believed into Him then you are a lost child of God…and need to come to Jesus.

Or you can also be a believer in Jesus but still be like a lost child of God. This is what believing in the Nicene Christian religious image of god does to us. It makes us lost burdened souls trying so hard to please an unpleasable god. We end up becoming like this false hurtful god and hate him and ourselves but unable to get free of him because of fear and torment if we rebel and come through to the REAL GOD who promises to carry us all the way home.

May I suggest a book for you if you are one of my brethren who feel lost though you are saved?

And so we see our brothers and sisters in Christ living and walking inside of the goodness, love, and joy of Salvation, yet knowing in their minds almost none of it.

What is the cause of this terrible disconnect between the Jesus of their hearts whom they know and love and the image of “Christ” which they hold in their intellects, a “Christ” always at war with Jesus alive inside of them?
