Durance becomes Esperance

God is a Master story teller and uses real events and people including you to tell His story. I don’t  mean that you sit there and read a story to someone–but that you are a character in God’s story that is ongoing and unfolding. What you are going through together with others and inside of God who is carrying you is the outworking of His story(history).

With that in mind today I again  looked at the story of the two French naval ships that visited this area of the world 229 years ago –December 1792. Both ships speak prophetically to me personally and to many giving hope and context to what is going on.

We are on the brink of deliverance!! Those who sat in darkness and in chains of iron are about to be set free!! Psalm 107:10-16

The Recherche and the Espérance sailed close by these shores between Dec 5/6th to December18th before heading east to Tasmania in the search for lost French ships under Captain Lapérouse.

The Recherche was first called Truite

The Recherche was first named Truite or Trout in English. A trout is a strong swimming cunning fish that is able to elude being captured or being found and also can swim in the most turbulent water. Here in my area there is a Trout hatchery in Pemberton  where they grow Rainbow Trout ( truite arc-en-ciel)to be placed into the local rivers as they are not a native species here.

Also the beach I go to mostly is called Salmon Beach — there is also a salmon Trout…and we get large schools of Pacific Salmon here as they migrate along the coast hence the name Salmon Beach.

Rear Admiral Bruni D’Entrecasteaux captained the Recherche. Point D’Entrecasteaux bears his name.

The Recherche was first a fish(Truite) in 1787.

200 years after Recherche commissioned I was a Fisherman working on Prawn(shrimp)boats in Shark Bay, Western Australia from 1981 -1987. 1981 was the first full fishing season I did and the first year I heard the Gospel as an adult(19/20yr old) I worked on Trawlers until 1987….

The French ship Truite was renamed Recherche for her new mission in 1791.

Recherche means Research-search-interrogation-searching-quest-study-pursuit- rummage-examine!!

In December 1987 I left Fishing and became a State Fisheries Inspector starting in April 1988- –May 1992.

In 1991  I lived and worked in Geraldton, Western Australia as a Fisheries Inspector on a 23metre Patrol boat(Baudin) out at the Houtman Abrolhos islands

A ship that was a fish–that now in a new life searches and inspects and studies and interrogates. Perfectly describes my life and who I am.

I was a fisherman from a line of fisherman going back to the 17 and 1800’s until I became an Inspector searching for illegal fishing and also  a Christian who loves to research and investigate and to interrogate and discover.

Both ships are speaking prophetically to me personally which is astounding to me. But this is one powerful way Father speaks to us.

The Espérance was the Durance

The Espérance(hope, expectation, good hope) was originally  named Durance  in 1781 which means confined to prison and imprisonment, restraint, bound even coercion.

Prophetically speaking the first name of the ship that came close to my favourite beach speaks of imprisonment and confinement and being bound in chains doing hard labour that I have done and also many many more of us. In 1981 I was 20 years of age and still in a prison of sin. I heard the Gospel during that year sensing conviction  and eventually came to Jesus in April 1989.  So 1981 marked the beginning of coming out of imprisonment for me…..40 years later 2021 I am hearing this message of Espérance the ship that was imprisoned and restrained becoming the ship bringing good hope by grace.

Conclusion

Three days ago the Holy Spirit spoke prophetically to me at the end of that post I wrote Hope against Hope that my captivity is ended.

So be not alarmed and be not anxious about it My child for the days of your captivity are ended and the days of your release have come upon you…for the proud and the boastful have met their day and you shall rise and they shall fall–for have I not said that you shall walk with Me on your high places. I delight to do this, I delight to lift up the needy and to carry them upon My shoulder’s for you are even My sons and daughters I love you as My very own Son…so again I say to you–be not afraid!! Trust in Me and what I have said and do not doubt it. The river is wide and looks hard to cross but it is when you put your feet into it that it stops flowing from upstream. So I will lead you and you shall triumph for My faith shall carry you and you will see it.

I had no idea then that the ship Espérance was previously named “Durance” meaning captivity and imprisonment! Nor did I yet know that “Recherche” the other ship captained by Bruni D’Entrecasteaux was previously named Truite a fish and that the years of both ships  matched my own journey from Fisherman to Investigator and the Esperance speaking of from prison to Hope.

These two ships were on a mission to find and rescue Lapérouse and also to contact the local people and study the coastline, the geography and flora and fauna everywhere they went. This all happened 40 to 80 years before the first colonies of Europeans in Western Australia which was not until 1829 in Perth and in Australind in 1841.

I believe God has caused me to see this history not just for my own edification but also as a prophetic message for many others in this we are living in when there is a huge storm rolling across the land and sea.

These two ships were both almost destroyed by a storm that hit the area now known as Espérance on December 12th 1792….BUT!!!

Fortunately, however, they found an anchorage where they were able to ride out the worst of the gale. Landings were made here on the mainland, and the locality was named in honour of Legrand, who had spotted the anchorage, and the ship he was on, Espérance.

I do believe that is a message of hope to us and I wrote about in that previous post

Many of us fear being destroyed by the current storm…and alas many have been. But there is a safe refuge to be found for those seeking one. His name is Jesus Christ.

He is that safe refuge and hiding place from the storm. But also He is able to guide you into a safe refuge in the natural as well and to protect you and keep you.

Deliverance from the storm is at hand. These ships prophesy to us deliverance and Jubilee!!

ps. 107: 10 Those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,
Bound in affliction and irons—
11 Because they rebelled against the words of God,
And despised the counsel of the Most High,
12 Therefore He brought down their heart with labor;
They fell down, and there was none to help.
13 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He saved them out of their distresses.
14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,
And broke their chains in pieces.
15 Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
16 For He has broken the gates of bronze,
And cut the bars of iron in two.

Den Rhodes

This is me Who is blind but My servant, Or deaf as My messenger whom I send? Who is blind as he who is perfect, And blind as the Lord’s servant? “The Lord God has given Me The tongue of the learned, That I should know how to speak A word in season to him who is weary. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear To hear as the learned. The Lord God has opened My ear; And I was not rebellious, Nor did I turn away. I gave My back to those who struck Me, And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting. “For the Lord God will help Me; Therefore I will not be disgraced; Therefore I have set My face like a flint, And I know that I will not be ashamed. He is near who justifies Me; Who will contend with Me? Let us stand together. Who is My adversary? Let him come near Me. Surely the Lord God will help Me; Who is he who will condemn Me? Indeed they will all grow old like a garment; The moth will eat them up. “Who among you fears the Lord? Who obeys the voice of His Servant? Who walks in darkness And has no light? Let him trust in the name of the Lord And rely upon his God. Look, all you who kindle a fire, Who encircle yourselves with sparks: Walk in the light of your fire and in the sparks you have kindled— This you shall have from My hand: You shall lie down in torment.
